The Foundational Questions Institute (FQxI) has announced the 2025 Essay Competition under the theme “How Quantum is Life?”. The contest invites participants from around the world to explore the intersections of quantum theory, biology, and the very foundations of life through original and thought-provoking essays.
Submissions will be accepted until September 29, 2025, at 10 AM US Eastern Time.
Theme: How Quantum is Life?
The competition seeks essays that creatively and rigorously address the role of quantum mechanics in life and living systems. Participants are encouraged to present novel insights, fresh perspectives, and critical reflections that contribute to the broader understanding of this emerging field.

Essays must meet minimal professional standards of acceptability for publication (qualitative and quantitative).

Only one entry per person is permitted.

Cash Prizes (Total Prize Pool: US$53,000)

Non-Cash Prizes

Possible Publication: Selected essays may be adapted for publication with Springer. Previous winning essays have been featured in FQxI’s Bookshop publications.
Judging Process

Submissions will be screened for eligibility.
