ESA Space Gallery Competition

This winter, ESA’s friendly character Paxi invites young learners to embark on a creative adventure through the world of pixel art. Participants are encouraged to explore colourful, block-based designs inspired by the digital artwork displayed on the Astro Pi computers currently aboard the International Space Station.

The Astro Pis are two special computers installed on the ISS, used by young people to display pixel art for astronauts and perform tasks such as calculating the speed of the station as it orbits Earth. December marks an important milestone, as the Astro Pis celebrate their tenth birthday, making this year’s challenge even more memorable.

Last year’s competition featured a range of imaginative entries programmed by students, showcasing inventive pixel characters and scenes. Building on that enthusiasm, this year’s competition again asks children to consider what stories and images they can bring to life using simple digital squares.

Participants may choose any form of artistic expression for their submission. Artwork can be a drawing, painting, model, or digital creation, allowing children the freedom to explore different media and styles. The emphasis is on creativity and originality, encouraging young people to experiment and let their ideas grow.

Submissions for this month’s competition must be sent by 31 January 2026. Selected entries will be featured in the ESA Space Gallery, and winners will receive a special prize from the European Space Agency. Monthly winners will be announced on the ESA Kids website, where families and schools can follow the progress of the competition.

Entries may be uploaded via the online form or sent by post to:

ESA Education, ESTEC
Keplerlaan 1
PO Box 299
NL-2200 AG Noordwijk
The Netherlands

The competition is open to children up to the age of 12. Through this activity, ESA aims to inspire young people to express themselves artistically while sparking interest in space, technology, and creative thinking.
