The Bombay YMCA is proud to announce the XXXVII National Inter-School Elocution Competition for the prestigious Sam T. Berkeley-Hill Memorial Trophy. As part of Bombay YMCA’s 150th Sesquicentennial celebrations, this year’s event has expanded to a national scale, welcoming schools from six YMCA zones across India. The competition aims to encourage students to express their ideas eloquently while fostering the YMCA’s core values of Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Honesty.
Event Details
Eligibility:
The competition is open to English-medium high school students in Standards 8th, 9th, or 10th from Mumbai, Chennai, Ernakulam, New Delhi, Cuttack, and Bengaluru. Each school may register up to three participants (one from each eligible grade).
Registration:
Schools must submit the entry form by Saturday, 30th November 2024, by 5:00 p.m. The entry fee is Rs. 500/- per school.
Competition Structure
Preliminary Rounds:
Zonal preliminary rounds will be held in six cities. The top three students from each zone will advance to the Grand Finale, to be held in Mumbai. Round-trip travel expenses (IIAC train fare) for selected students and one accompanying teacher will be covered by Bombay YMCA.

Guidelines and Themes
- Theme: Participants should prepare a speech, prose, or poem centered on the YMCA values: Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Honesty.
- Speech Duration: Each participant has a maximum of 3 minutes to deliver their speech, from memory, without notes.
- Judging Criteria: Participants will be evaluated on Content (20 marks), Delivery (10 marks), Enunciation (10 marks), and Conclusion (10 marks).

Grand Finale Awards:
- Winner: Rs. 20,000/- & Trophy
- 1st Runner-Up: Rs. 15,000/- & Trophy
- 2nd Runner-Up: Rs. 10,000/- & Trophy
Zonal Awards:
- Individual Winner: Rs. 5,000/- & Trophy
- 1st Runner-Up: Rs. 3,000/- & Trophy
- 2nd Runner-Up: Rs. 2,000/- & Trophy
Additional Honorable Mention Certificates (if deserved) and Participation Certificates will be awarded to all participants.
Important Notes
- Participants should arrive 30 minutes prior to the competition start time.
- Students are expected to dress in semi-formal attire and introduce the theme to the audience without directly addressing the judges.
- The Bombay YMCA reserves the right to make final changes to dates, venues, or times.
