The NSS Gerard K. O’Neill Space Settlement Contest is now open for submissions, inviting students up to 12th grade to explore innovative concepts for free space settlements. This annual contest, held since 1994, challenges young minds to think creatively about permanent living environments in space, distinct from temporary work camps.
Contest Overview
Submission Guidelines
- Deadline: All entries must be submitted by February 15, 2025, at 2:00 AM PST.
- Categories: Participants can enter as individuals or in groups, with categories divided by grade level (7th grade and younger, 8th grade, 9th grade, 10th grade, 11th grade, and 12th grade). Each category allows for individual entries as well as small groups (2-5 students) and large groups (6-12 students).
- Entry Fee: There is a $15 entry fee, which can be waived in cases of financial hardship.
What to Submit
Participants are encouraged to submit a wide range of materials related to their space settlement concepts. Acceptable submissions include:
- Designs
- Original research
- Essays
- Stories
- Models
- Artwork
Projects should focus on the concept of a permanent space settlement that does not reside on any planet or moon. However, support activities like mining may be included.
Judging and Prizes
Entries will be judged based on creativity and feasibility. The best submission overall will receive the grand prize and will be featured on the contest website. Additionally, the highest-ranking entry from students attending the International Space Development Conference (ISDC) will earn the Herman Rubin Memorial Scholarship of $5,000 and an opportunity to present at the conference.Participants will also receive certificates upon submission—PDF certificates for all participants and winner certificates that include names of the students will be emailed by late August.
