The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and Math for America are excited to announce their annual essay contest aimed at celebrating the contributions of women and individuals from underrepresented gender identities in the mathematical sciences. This contest invites middle school, high school, and undergraduate students to write biographical essays based on interviews with contemporary mathematicians and statisticians.
Submission Period
• Open: December 1, 2024
• Close: February 1, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time
Eligibility
Students in the following categories can participate:
• Grades 6 – 8
• Grades 9 – 12
• Undergraduate
Submission Requirements
To submit an entry, participants must include:
1. A biographical essay (500 – 1000 words) based primarily on an interview with a woman or individual from an underrepresented gender identity in the mathematics community.
2. A short biographical sketch (approximately 100 words) about the student contestant, including their name, grade level, school, and mathematical interests.
3. Contact information for both the student and the interview subject.

Judging Criteria
Essays will be evaluated based on:
• Content and originality
• Clarity of writing
• Overall presentation
At least one winner will be chosen from each category, with prizes including monetary awards, a membership in AWM, certificates, and publication opportunities.
Finding an Interview Subject
Participants are encouraged to reach out to women mathematicians or individuals from underrepresented gender identities currently working or retired from mathematical careers. Suggestions for potential interviewees include:
• Professors at local colleges or universities
• Professionals in industries such as engineering, finance, or data analysis
• Mathematicians active on social media platforms
This contest not only promotes awareness of women's contributions to mathematics but also encourages students to engage with role models in the field.
