WMO 2026 Calendar Photography Competition

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has officially announced the launch of its 2026 Calendar Photography Competition. This highly anticipated annual event invites photographers from around the world to submit their most compelling images that reflect the power and impact of weather, climate, and water on lives and livelihoods.

Since its inception in 2014, the WMO Calendar Competition has grown in visibility and reach, attracting participants from a wide array of countries and gaining recognition across various United Nations platforms. Selected photographs are featured not only in the official WMO calendar but also across the organization’s website, social media channels, public outreach materials, and during World Meteorological Day celebrations.

Theme for 2026

The 2026 competition focuses on the impacts of weather, climate, and water—both positive and negative—on people around the globe. Photographers are encouraged to submit high-quality images that illustrate nature’s power and the importance of protecting the planet. WMO also welcomes photographs that capture the essence of its mission and the work of national meteorological and hydrological services.

Global Representation

As a specialized agency of the United Nations, WMO is committed to ensuring geographical balance in the competition. The organization continues to encourage submissions from new participants, particularly from underrepresented regions, to showcase the diversity of environmental experiences and challenges worldwide.

Recognition and Visibility

While there is no financial reward, the competition offers significant visibility and recognition. Winning photographs will be included in the printed WMO 2026 Calendar—one for each month, plus a cover image. They will also be shared with other U.N. agencies and promoted through multiple platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, and X (formerly Twitter). Selected entries may also be featured in U.N. news stories and publications.

Judging Criteria

A panel of WMO experts in meteorology, hydrology, and photography will evaluate entries based on the following:

  • Illustration of the impact of weather, climate, and water

  • Technical quality and clarity

  • Composition and visual impact

  • Originality and creativity

An initial shortlist of approximately 75 photos will be created based on artistic and technical merit. These shortlisted entries will then be posted on social media for public voting. Final selections for the calendar will be made by the WMO jury, taking into account both the public vote and the goal of maintaining regional representation.

Submission Guidelines

To enter the competition, photographers must:

  • Submit a photo in landscape (horizontal) format

  • Ensure the photo is a minimum size of 4000 x 3000 pixels

  • Provide images in JPEG or TIFF format with minimal compression

  • Include a clear caption with a title, location, and date

  • Submit through the official Entry Form

  • Use the hashtag #WMOphoto when sharing on personal social media

  • Include their social media handles for proper crediting

Both black and white and color photographs are eligible for submission.

Deadline for Submissions

The deadline to submit entries is 15 June 2025. Participants must review and agree to the Terms and Conditions before entering the contest.

WMO encourages aspiring and professional photographers alike to take part in this global initiative to raise awareness about the dynamic and vital relationship between people and the natural elements that shape their world.
