Spotlight on Aspiring Filmmakers: JASNA’s 2025 Young Filmmakers Contest Celebrates Austen’s 250th Birthday
The Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) is once again opening the curtain for young creative talent with its 2025 Young Filmmakers Contest—an annual event designed to foster new interpretations of Austen's timeless works and life. Now in its ninth year, this contest offers a platform for amateur filmmakers aged 30 and under to showcase their passion for storytelling, film, and the world of Jane Austen.
In celebration of Austen’s 250th birthday in 2025, this year’s contest carries the theme “Austen at 250: ‘No check to my Genius from beginning to end’,” and invites original short films (5 minutes or less) that explore Austen’s novels, characters, themes, letters, juvenilia, or even creative adaptations of her world. Whether drawn to Elizabeth Bennet’s wit or inspired by Emma’s social meddling, filmmakers are encouraged to think boldly and interpret freely.
New for 2025, the competition has expanded globally—welcoming amateur filmmakers from around the world, so long as the film’s dialogue is in English. No JASNA membership is required, and participation is entirely free. A smartphone and a strong imagination are the only tools needed to enter.
The contest offers substantial rewards:
-
$600 for first place
-
$300 for second place
-
$200 for third place
Each winner also receives a one-year JASNA membership and written feedback from a panel of renowned judges, whose past roster includes names like Amy Heckerling, Gurinder Chadha, Robin Swicord, and Ken Turan.
Winning entries will premiere during JASNA’s 2025 Annual General Meeting and will be showcased globally on the JASNA website and YouTube channel, giving young filmmakers a rare opportunity to reach an international audience.
The submission deadline is June 20, 2025. Entrants must register in advance to receive the contest entry form, guidelines, and a stream of inspirational emails full of tips and behind-the-scenes insights. There’s no obligation to submit a film after signing up, and participants can unsubscribe at any time.
