56th Annual AFSF High School Design Competition 2025 - International Contest


The Architectural Foundation of San Francisco (AFSF) is excited to announce the 56th Annual AFSF High School Design Competition! This prestigious event invites high school students from both public and private schools across the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond to showcase their creativity and vision in urban design.

2025 Challenge: Reimagining Market Street

For the 2025 competition, participants are tasked with designing a vibrant, socially-active public realm along San Francisco’s Market Street to support the city's downtown economic recovery. This initiative aligns with the Roadmap to San Francisco’s Future, which was introduced in 2023 with the goal of attracting 30,000 new residents and students to live, work, and engage downtown by 2030.

Key Themes for the Competition

Participants should focus on one of the following themes when designing their projects:

  1. Economic Diversification and the Future of Office

  2. Expanding Downtown Housing

  3. Public Life and Ground Floor Activation

Design Brief and Guidelines

Each participant will select a specific site within the Market Street corridor and propose a creative, highly-utilized public space that enhances economic and social engagement. Detailed information, including context, suggestions, and design aspects to consider, can be found in the official design brief.

How to Participate

The competition is open to individual and group entries. The submission process is entirely online and requires participants to submit the following:

  • A Google Slides deck presenting their drawings, model, and design description

  • A brief (maximum 2-minute) video explaining the project and design process

Key Dates

  • Final Submission Deadline: Friday, May 16th, 2025

  • Awards Presentation Reception: Sunday, May 18th, 2025

Awards & Recognition

The competition will award multiple prizes in the following categories:

  1. Best Design (Single Entrant)

  2. Best Group Entry

Additionally, the first-place winner in the Overall Superiority category will receive a four-week Summer Pre-College Scholarship at the California College of the Arts.
