International Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition 2025

The International Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition (IAAC) stands as a prestigious global platform designed to ignite and nurture a passion for space sciences among students. Open to participants from around the world, the IAAC offers young minds the chance to demonstrate their skills in astronomy and astrophysics through a multi-round educational competition that extends beyond traditional classroom boundaries.

Who Can Participate?

The IAAC welcomes current high school and university students, organizing them into three distinct age groups:

  • Junior: Students in 10th grade or below and under 16 years of age

  • Youth: Students from 11th to 13th grade and under 19 years of age

  • Senior: University students or those aged 19 and above

Each age group is challenged according to its level, with varying thresholds for advancement to subsequent rounds. Participants are encouraged to think critically and creatively, often needing to consult real-world scientific research to tackle the problems presented.

Structure and Timeline

The competition unfolds across three main rounds:

  1. Qualification Round: The entry point for all participants, this round presents five problems that test both theoretical understanding and problem-solving abilities in astronomy. Each problem is worth five points. To progress, students must score at least 15, 17, or 20 points depending on their age category. This round remains open until July 4, 2025, at 23:59 UTC+0.

  2. Pre-Final Round: Qualified participants from the initial stage move on to the Pre-Final Round in August 2025. This round delves deeper into astronomy and astrophysics, challenging students with more advanced content and application-based questions.

  3. Final Round: The top scorers from the Pre-Final Round enter the Final Round, a supervised online multiple-choice exam featuring 20 comprehensive questions. Finalists may choose to take the exam under the supervision of a teacher or via a self-recorded session.

Prizes and Recognition

Beyond the thrill of competition, the IAAC offers tangible rewards. Top performers receive 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes, with a total award value of $1,400. This includes cash prizes and exclusive telescopes autographed by astronaut Frank De Winne and Nobel Prize laureates François Englert, Gerard 't Hooft, Michel Mayor, and Didier Queloz. All participants are granted official certificates, and special national awards recognize the highest scorers from each country.

Additionally, digitally typed solution submissions are acknowledged with an honorary note on participant certificates, encouraging attention to detail and professional presentation.

Support for Educators and Schools

The IAAC also extends its mission to educators and institutions. Teachers, schools, and parents are encouraged to introduce the competition as an enriching extracurricular opportunity. IAAC provides promotional materials and offers support throughout the process. Special awards are also available for schools and teachers who demonstrate outstanding commitment to science education.

A Gateway to the Cosmos

In essence, the International Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition is more than just a contest—it's an opportunity for students worldwide to explore the universe, develop scientific literacy, and gain international recognition for their talents. With a structured format, generous awards, and a strong emphasis on learning, the IAAC continues to inspire the next generation of astronomers and astrophysicists.
