Nagrika's Annual Youth Wrting Contest • 7th Edition

Nāgrika, a civic engagement organisation working across small towns in India to amplify citizen voices in urban planning and governance, has announced the seventh edition of its annual writing contest, My City's Eye Witness. The competition invites young adults to explore the stories of their cities through a unique and imaginative lens.

This year's theme encourages participants to write from the perspective of a non-human witness in a public space—such as a tree, bridge, streetlamp, bench, or monument—that has silently observed the city's transformation over time. Through this creative exercise, writers are encouraged to reflect on urban change, memory, community, and the relationship between people and the places they inhabit.

The contest is open to young adults aged 18 to 30 from across India. Entries are accepted in both English and Hindi, with separate categories for each language. Participants may submit prose in the form of stories, essays, or letters, with a word count ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 words.

To encourage emerging voices, Nāgrika is offering cash prizes for the top entries. The first prize winner will receive ₹15,000, the second prize ₹10,000, and the third prize ₹5,000. In addition, a number of Special Mentions will be awarded to outstanding submissions.

Participation in the contest is completely free, making it accessible to aspiring writers from across the country.

The last date for submitting entries is 31 July at 11:59 PM IST.

Interested participants can find the contest guidelines and submit their entries by visiting https://www.nagrika.org/writing-contest.

By inviting participants to imagine their cities through the eyes of silent witnesses, Nāgrika continues its mission of fostering thoughtful conversations about urban spaces and encouraging young people to engage with the evolving stories of their communities.
