FAO International Day of Forests Photo Contest

Forests are more than just lush green landscapes; they are vital sources of food, nutrition, and agricultural sustainability. From nourishing fruits and nuts to supporting pollinators that help crops grow, forests play an essential role in global food security. To honor this deep connection, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) invites you to participate in the International Day of Forests Photo Contest and showcase how forests contribute to food and nutrition.

Why Participate?

Forests provide a wide variety of foods such as nuts, fruits, seeds, roots, tubers, leaves, mushrooms, honey, and even game meat and insects. They also help maintain soil fertility, protect water sources, and regulate rainfall, making them critical for sustainable agriculture. This contest is an opportunity to highlight the role of forests in feeding the world and ensuring a healthy planet.

How to Enter the Contest

Participating is simple. Follow these three steps to submit your entry:

1. Capture a Photo – Take a picture that illustrates the connection between forests, trees, and food. It could be a wild food dish, a marketplace displaying forest-sourced foods, a foraging activity, a pollinator in action, or a tree that bears nourishing fruits and nuts.
2. Submit Your Entry – Fill out the online entry form and describe your photo. Explain why you chose that image and how it represents the theme.
3. Share Your Photo – Post your submission on social media using the hashtag #ForestDay to spread awareness and celebrate the importance of forests.

Judging and Prizes

Entries will be evaluated based on:

• Originality – A unique perspective on the theme
• Relevance – How well the image connects forests and food
• Artistic Value – Visual appeal and composition
• Communication Potential – The ability to convey a powerful message

Age Categories

To ensure fair competition, entries will be judged in three age groups:

• Children: 6 to 14 years old
• Youth: 15 to 24 years old
• Adults: 25 years and older

Awards and Recognition

The five winning photographs will be announced on March 21, 2025, in celebration of the International Day of Forests. Winners will receive:

• Their photos featured on FAO’s social media platforms
• An exclusive showcase at the FAO Headquarters in Rome as part of a photography exhibition
• A collection of FAO merchandise, including a water bottle, backpack, and keep cup

Submission Deadline

All entries must be submitted by March 12, 2025, at 12:00 CET.
