The Harvard Crimson, Harvard University’s oldest student-run newspaper, has officially opened pre-registration for the Harvard Crimson Global Essay Competition (HCGEC) 2026—a prestigious international writing challenge for high school students aged 13 to 18.
Set to run from February to March 2026, the HCGEC invites ambitious, globally-minded students from every corner of the world to develop their writing skills, compete for international recognition, and engage with a global community of young thinkers.
What Is the HCGEC?
The Harvard Crimson Global Essay Competition is a 100% virtual event that challenges students to think critically, express themselves clearly, and explore university-style academic writing—all before entering college. Hosted by students of Harvard College, the competition is designed to prepare participants for advanced academic writing while providing an exciting platform to gain visibility and recognition for their ideas.

Competition Format
The HCGEC is divided into two rounds:

Regional Qualifiers
Students first compete within their respective global regions. The top 40 participants in each region will advance to the Global Finals. -
Global Finals
The finalists will compete for the title of Global Winner, with 12 global winners selected across categories.
