Dr. Mathews J., who held positions like Idukki District President and Kollam District Committee Member of AKGCT, left us on 18th August 2019. He was suffering from cancer for a long time. Dr. Mathews J., who underwent two bone marrow transplants at the hospital in Vellore, fought the disease with extraordinary courage. Dr. Mathews J. who used to be a Volleyball player during his college days, spoke to his friends who contacted him on the phone a few days before his death with the perfect sportsman's spirit. These were his words."This is the fifth set of a volleyball match that I have been playing with this disease."
In memory of our beloved colleague, AKGCT Kollam District Committee conducted the 1st Mathews J. Memorial Prize Money Chess Tournament on 14th January 2020. Later, due to the spread of Covid19, the second and third tournaments were conducted online. The fourth tournament organized by AKGCT Kollam District Committee will be held on 14 January 2023.
