Kerala is endowed with rich flora and fauna. Survival of flora and fauna is in grave danger because of the rapid spurt in the human population and its ever-increasing needs.,
The Forest department started Nature Camps for students during the early nineteen eighty's. These camps provide a first-hand experience to the students and it makes them aware of the rising need to preserve nature and conserve natural resources.
Target groups:
Nature Camps shall be organized separately for the following target groups :
a). LKG and UKG students
(b ). Lower Primary students
(c). Upper Primary students
( d). High Schoo I students
(e). Higher Secondary and College students
(t). Media Personnel
(g). Corporation Councilors, Municipal Councilors, Jilla Fancbayat Members,
Block Panrhayat Members and Grama Panchayat Members
(h). Members of Charitable. Non-governmental and Youth Organizations
Duration:
1. Half day camp for LKG. UKG and Lower Primary students.
2. 22 hours camp for Upper Primary students.
3. 70 hours camp for High School students and
4. 46 hours camp for all other target groups.
Eligibility:
(a). Students studying in Government, Aided and Private Educational Institutions.
(b ). One Teaching staff for every nineteen students.
All students of LKG and UKG in a School will be permitted to participate in the Nature Camp Organized in their school. For all other camps, the number of participants shall be limited to forty.

Nature Camp Venues in Ernakulam District
One can run across the Sri Lankan Frogmouth, Racket Tailed Drongo, Bronzed Drongo, White-bellied Treepie, Shama, Yellow-browed Bulbul, Rufous Babbler, Malabar Parakeet, White-bellied Blue Flycatcher and the Malabar Grey Hornbill in these parts. Beautiful teak, rosewood and mahogany plantations can also be viewed here. It also boasts of over 28 mammal species and over 9 species of reptiles.
