The Institute traces its origins to the 2nd five year plan (1956-1961) which focused on the development of the public sector and rapid industrialization. The institute was established on 15th August, 1960 as Regional Institute of technology Jamshedpur (RIT Jamshedpur) as a Joint Venture between the Govt. of India and Govt. of Bihar (undivided) in the chain of Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) in India with aim to generate technical graduates of highest standars who could provide technological leadership to the region. It was among the first RECs to be established and only REC to be named as RIT.
The Institute was upgraded to the status of NIT w.e.f. 27th December, 2002 with the status of a Deemed University by the Govt. of India. Consequently, the Institute was given the status of the Institute of National Importance through an Act of the Parliament i.e. NIT Act, 2007.
