WMO 2022 Calendar Competition

WMO launches its annual photography competition for the WMO 2022 Calendar

COVID-19 pandemic is causing unprecedented upheaval and changing our lives forever. But it also provides an opportunity to reflect on how we can do more to protect the environment and the planet and to grow back better after the economic downturn.

Many people have commented that they were more aware and appreciative of the beauty of our natural surroundings during the lockdown.

WMO are therefore really looking forward to high-quality and artistic photographs, and especially those which illustrate the theme of World Meteorological Day 2022 , “Early Warning and Early Action. Hydrometeorological and Climate Information for Disaster Risk Reduction."

The winning photographs will be chosen based on a combination of social media votes, geographic balance and technical artistic merit judged by our WMO jury (which consists of communications experts, photographers and meteorologists). The jury will make the final decision on the 13 photos for inclusion in the calendar (one for the cover and one for each month). We hope to get photos from every region of the world.

Winning entries will feature in the WMO 2022 online calendar. They will be showcased on the WMO website and social media platforms and feature prominently in our World Meteorological Day 2022 celebrations.

As always, there will be lots of recognition but no financial reward, as per the submission guidelines.

Since it was launched in 2014, the WMO calendar competition has gained in stature and recognition. The United Nations regularly features your photos. Some National Meteorological and Hydrological Services also run their own photo contests and feed these entries to WMO. We look forward to your entries..

Utility of the Future Challenge: Delivering water and sanitation services in 2050

What do you think the water utility of the future will look like? Will it feature drones that inspect pipes internally and fix leakages? Will customer feedback be collected automatically and inform service changes? Will you be able to pay for services using cryptocurrency? Or will it entail the existence of contingency plans that are informed by the latest climate data? There are persistent problems that utilities face every day that limit their ability to provide water supply in their service areas.  These problems span from challenges in covering operational costs, to inability to supply water 24 hours a day to all residents. These challenges are being exacerbated by the effects of climate change and other threats such as COVID-19.

Name, Tagline and Logo contest for Development Financial Institution

Infrastructure is essential to building a new India. This would mean new projects, expanding existing infra and revitalizing decrepit infra. The National Infrastructure Pipeline of INR 111 Lakh Crore was a recognition of this need and accordingly over 7000 projects were identified. However, the execution and completion of these projects will require timely finance and the requirement of funds is large.

For many years, banks had been the primary source of funding infrastructure. Government has now taken a decision to create a Development Financial Institution (DFI) exclusively for funding infrastructure. This has been approved by Parliament through the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure & Development Act, 2021. This Infra DFI will be a Development Bank with credibility and a mandate through explicit Government support. This DFI will crowd in, not elbow out, other lenders. It will not do everything itself. Therefore, it will not only be a provider of credit and credit plus services but equally, be an enabler and a catalyst for a new ecosystem for infra based on collaboration and on partnership. Its operations will prioritize risk mitigation, product innovation, accessing green and ethical funds and helping to develop a vibrant bond market.
