UPU International Letter Writing Competition 2026 - India

The Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Letter Writing Competition 2026 is now open for young students, offering a unique opportunity to express ideas, creativity, and emotions through the timeless art of letter writing.

As per the official circular issued by the Central Board of Secondary Education , schools across India are encouraged to actively participate and promote this global competition.

๐Ÿ“ Theme for 2026

“Write a letter to a friend about why human connection matters in a digital world.”

This theme encourages students to reflect on:

  • The growing role of technology and digital communication
  • The importance of real human relationships
  • How meaningful connections impact mental and emotional well-being

๐ŸŽฏ Purpose of the Competition

The competition aims to:

  • Develop creativity and writing skills among students
  • Encourage clear expression of thoughts
  • Promote international friendship and understanding

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Eligibility

  • Open to students aged 9 to 15 years
  • Participants must be within this age limit as per official rules

๐Ÿ“… Important Dates (India Level)

According to the Annexure (Page 3) of the circular:

  • Entries to reach Circle Level by: 20 March 2026
  • Final entries to Directorate by: 31 March 2026
  • International submission deadline (UPU): 5 May 2026

๐Ÿ“„ Submission Format

As specified in the official guidelines:

  • Must be written in letter format
  • Must be handwritten
  • Maximum 800 words
  • Language:
    • English OR
    • Any language listed in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution

๐Ÿ“‘ Mandatory Details

Each entry must include (first page):

  • Participant’s name
  • Date of birth
  • Photograph
  • School name and address
  • Full postal address
  • Parent/guardian details

Incomplete entries will not be accepted .

  • ๐Ÿฅ‡ ₹50,000 + Certificate
  • ๐Ÿฅˆ ₹25,000 + Certificate
  • ๐Ÿฅ‰ ₹10,000 + Certificate

๐ŸŒ International Level (UPU)

  • Gold, Silver, Bronze Medals
  • Certificates and special prizes
  • Gold winner may get a trip to UPU Headquarters, Bern (Switzerland)

  • Schools conduct initial selection
  • Best entries move to Circle Level
  • Top entries selected at National Level
  • One best entry represents India at the international level
