The Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Letter Writing Competition 2026 is now open for young students, offering a unique opportunity to express ideas, creativity, and emotions through the timeless art of letter writing.
As per the official circular issued by the Central Board of Secondary Education , schools across India are encouraged to actively participate and promote this global competition.
๐ Theme for 2026
“Write a letter to a friend about why human connection matters in a digital world.”
This theme encourages students to reflect on:
- The growing role of technology and digital communication
- The importance of real human relationships
- How meaningful connections impact mental and emotional well-being
๐ฏ Purpose of the Competition
The competition aims to:
- Develop creativity and writing skills among students
- Encourage clear expression of thoughts
- Promote international friendship and understanding
๐ฅ Eligibility
- Open to students aged 9 to 15 years
- Participants must be within this age limit as per official rules
๐ Important Dates (India Level)
According to the Annexure (Page 3) of the circular:
- Entries to reach Circle Level by: 20 March 2026
- Final entries to Directorate by: 31 March 2026
- International submission deadline (UPU): 5 May 2026
๐ Submission Format
As specified in the official guidelines:
- Must be written in letter format
- Must be handwritten
- Maximum 800 words

- Any language listed in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution

Each entry must include (first page):
- Participant’s name
- Date of birth
- Photograph
- School name and address
- Full postal address
- Parent/guardian details
Incomplete entries will not be accepted .

- ๐ฅ ₹50,000 + Certificate
- ๐ฅ ₹25,000 + Certificate
- ๐ฅ ₹10,000 + Certificate
๐ International Level (UPU)
- Gold, Silver, Bronze Medals
- Certificates and special prizes
- Gold winner may get a trip to UPU Headquarters, Bern (Switzerland)

- Best entries move to Circle Level
- Top entries selected at National Level
- One best entry represents India at the international level
