“Visions / Solutions for a sustainable tomorrow”: International online competition

Visions/SolutionsFrom a scientific point of view, one thing is certain: the climate is changing, and this is a result of human activity. But what can we do? This online competition offers you the chance to develop and contribute your own ideas.

Every single day, we are confronted with pictures of a fast-approaching climate catastrophe in the media. This is important, as we should all be made aware of the consequences which have already occurred. We should also take note of the possible consequences which may still arise if we do not change our way of thinking and acting as quickly and as sustainably as possible. But always having these negative consequences in mind can also paralyse us.

We therefore need to find a positive outlook for a different future. A sustainable way of life offers a wealth of opportunities, not only in ecological and economic terms, but also socially and culturally. In order to achieve sustainability in a comprehensive way, it is necessary to test new forms of coexistence together and redefine our relationship to the natural world. This requires visionary concepts of what a sustainable society and a sparing use of resources may look like. In turn, these visions must be combined with practical solutions for very specific problems with regard to the climate and environment.

Categories
You can enter in either the VISIONS category with your artistic, creative or simply well thought-out visions of a sustainable society, or in the SOLUTIONS category with your specific proposals for solutions to sustainability-relevant problems.

Eligibility
Open to all.
Both individuals and teams can enter the competition. There are no costs to enter the competition; entry is free.

Last Date
The closing date for submissions in both categories is 15 May 2020 at 23:59 CEST (cut-off date).

Prizes
A total of three entries in each of the two categories will be awarded the following prize money:

1st place: 2,000 Euros
2nd place: 1,500 Euros
3rd place: 1,000 Euros
Winners will be notified of their prize by email. Participants whose entries could not be considered for a prize will also be notified by us shortly afterwards. The awards ceremony will take place in public as part of an event organised by Die Junge Akademie.

International Kid’s painting Contest on Corona-Crisis

DIE ZEIT and the International Museum of Children’s Art invites entries for international art competition for students.
Kid’s paintings on Corona-Crisis: Join the worldwide call! #kidspaintcorona

You can draw history!
The German weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT and The International Museum of Children’s Art in Oslo, Norway start a call for kid’s paintings on the Corona-Crisis.

Since the pandemic does not care about boarders, the organisers are also looking for partners all over the world to join this call and spread the information!. An international children’s Art-movement, historical documents which people in the future will look at and learn from!

The art campaign promotes artistic expression inviting kids world wide to present their emotions, feelings, ideas and on the covid-19
The aim is also to raise awareness of children’s rights to self-expression and opinion, according to the UN Convention, Rights of the Child, Article no. 12-13.

TO ALL CHILDREN AND YOUNG!
Corona virus is turning our lives upside down – but how do you get along with it? Paint a picture and become part of our global art protect! All over the world children and young are asked to preserve these days with pen and paper for our future.

Imagine, you were able to step into a time machine and travel into the future, let’s say to the year 2050. Of course you’ll be a grown-up then, and these crazy corona days we are going through right now will be a memory from a distant past. But what exactly will you remember? Are you still going to know how you celebrated your Easter holidays? Which were the fun moments, when everyone had to stay at home? Are you still going to remember, how many weeks you haven’t seen your grandparents? Or how long your hair grew, because all the hairdressers were closed?  Why should anyone in the future care about all that? The answer is simple: One day the corona virus will be found in history books. Even though you wish for this whole nightmare to end soon – you are experiencing a time adults call „historical“. A time, people will remember for a very long time.

In the future, it will be easy to find out what politicians and scientists thought during that time. They appear in the news every day. But what about you? How do you experience the corona days? What about all the other kids all over the world?

That is what we want to know – and preserve it for the future, in a large art project. Together with the International Museum of Children’s Art in Oslo and a lot of supporters from all over the world we are calling for a major painting campaign. And you can be part of it!

Paint for us!
It should be a picture, of course, but how big and colorful it is going to be is freely up to you. You are free to draw whatever you like. Maybe you wanna turn the virus into a comic. Maybe you are going to paint the view from your window. Or you try to express your feelings with colors. Paint, whatever makes you happy, whatever scares you or paint something you really miss. You could also travel through time in your head and paint a picture of what you wish for the future after corona.

Playhouse Design Competition - Play at Home

Three Manchester design studios are hosting the PLAYHOUSE Competition jointly to design something that will enable people to play at home during lockdown.

Play is an essential part of all our lives, whether child or adult. Be it playing sports, a board game
or simply sharing jokes with friends, play is just as important to adults as building a den or playing
dress-up is to a child.
The Coronavirus outbreak has left many of us having to spend extended periods of time at home
in lockdown, restricting the opportunity to socialise and play in ways that we are used to.

How can we use creativity to encourage play at these unique times?

 The Brief

To design something that will enable people to play at home during lockdown. Your design could make an existing everyday activity playful, provide a break from work, or make work more fun. It could recreate some form of existing outdoor play inside the house, create a whole new type of game, or do something entirely different to create play!
It could be for adults or children, and enable a person to play alone, with their family or housemates, or even with their neighbours or friends far away. Your design should only use objects commonly found in the house, garden or shed in its construction or as props. It could make play inside or outside the house (in the garden) or even on the house itself!

Inspiration sources and examples

For inspiration, you might consider the different types of play that exist. (Listed right)
You might also find inspiration in the work of: Heath Robinson, Rube Goldberg or Japanese Chindogu.
Some examples of designs created around the house might be:
House maze
By using the furniture available in each room, siblings could create a maze that runs the length and height of the house for each other; changing the winning route each hour.
Washing line stories
By making a makeshift pulley system from washing lines, bike wheels and clothes pegs, stories could be written on paper and pulled back and forth to be shared between neighbours.

Types of Games

Intellectual play:
Solving mental mind games for pleasure. e.g. doing a board game.
Social play:
Interacting with others through playful scenarios. e.g going to the pub or play-fighting.
Active play:
Moving all or part of the body, to actively induce a playful state of mind. e.g going swimming
Extreme play:
Using extreme scenarios or conditions to induce a range of emotions resulting in pleasure. e.g skateboarding.
Exploratory play:
Using your senses to experience the world around you. e.g exploring the woods.
Imaginative play:
Inventing scenarios in your imagination, and sometimes acting them out.
e.g playing shop.
Creative play:
Creating something new, for pleasure.
e.g painting a picture
Frivolous play:
Undertaking small and simple acts that induce a playful sensibility
e.g. playing a prank.

Submission requirements

One or two A3 sheets (landscape or portrait) explaining your design.
Your files should be saved as a high resolution (300dpi) PDF (Max 25MB) and should show an image or set of images of your design in use. This could be an illustration, a 2D/3D technical drawing, a photo of a model, an animation, a mix of these, or anything in between! You may want to add annotations, dimensions, constructio information, or zoom in on parts of your idea to help us understand how it might work.

 Submission Deadlines
First wave of submissions by 6pm Friday 24th April 2020 to be featured in May.
Second wave by 6pm Friday 22nd May 2020 to be featured in June.

VOICE -2020 (Vikram Sarabhai cOmpetitIon for Concept-Essay Writing 2020)

Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) also known as “cradle of space sciences” was founded by Dr. Vikram A. Sarabhai, the father of Indian space programme, in the year 1947. On the occasion of the birth centenary year (2019-2020) of Dr. Sarabhai, PRL started a pan India level essay competition for school children. This year school students of 8 to 10 standard can participate in this competition.

Categories:  8 - 10 standard students

Topic: A night with a Telescope

Description: The night sky has fascinated human minds since time immemorial. Early people noticed that the Moon changed shape from night to night; constellations of stars look like animals and people. The oldest records of astronomical observations are found on the walls of caves dating back to 30,000 years. The first astronomical observations using a telescope happened around 410 years ago by Galileo. Since then, observers used not only visible light but almost every electromagnetic wavelength, starting from radio to gamma-rays to observe the sky. Telescopes indeed became our eyes to observe the Universe. Now astronomers use telescopes over the whole spectrum in order to understand the celestial objects. Assume you are given time to observe with the best telescope in the world (you can choose any wavelength starting from radio to gamma-ray, even multi-messenger observations such as gravitational waves, neutrino or cosmic ray), tell us which object would you want to observe, and what mystery about it would you want to solve.

Guidelines
Students of standard 8 to 10 can participate. Students should submit the scan copy of the student information form (as given on the PRL website) attested by the Principal/Head of the Institution with official seal with the essay.
Essay should be submitted online in the prescribed format. Submission in any other mode will not be considered.
Word limit: 3000 words. It must contain a summary up to 300 words, major highlights in three bullet points not exceeding 75 words, and a conclusion in about 200 words, with other relevant details such as introduction, the body of the essay, figures, etc. The essay should contain the following:
Which mystery do you want to solve?
Which telescope would you wish to use?
Why do you think the chosen telescope is best suited?
Finally, how you want to solve the mystery?
Student Information Sheet PDF File, Word File

Evaluation Process
First phase: Maximum of about 50 students will be shortlisted
Second phase: Short-listed candidates will be invited to PRL for presentation and nine essays will be awarded
Note: Local hospitality to all the short-listed students with one accompanying person and the travel support in Sleeper (SL) class train/Govt. bus in shortest route upon request will be provided to the students.
