YLAC India - Young Leaders for Active Citizenship - Boot Camp

The YLAC boot camp is a one of a kind program, designed and curated to enable young adults to become active agents of change in their communities. It is meant to give them an opportunity to reflect deeply about their identity, to broaden their perspective and to arm them with skills to affect change in their immediate contexts. It is also designed to give them an early exposure to liberal arts and to introduce them to some emerging career options in the discipline.

The 21 day program will be anchored by Rohit Kumar (Alumnus of Harvard Kennedy School of Government) and Aparajita Bharti (Alumna of Blavatnik School of Government, Oxford University). The program will introduce participants to the theoretical underpinnings of democracy and the welfare state, engage them in live projects with partner NGOs and provide an opportunity to interact with an eclectic mix of speakers from diverse backgrounds.

YLAC invites participation from promising young adults (grades 9th-12th) who have a keen interest in making a contribution to the broader society. Please visit our applications page to apply to the program.

The first boot camp is scheduled to begin on the 5th of June 2016 (Sunday). It is designed to be a mix of exercises, lectures, site visits and group work. The boot camp will include a two week supervised internship in an organization to be chosen by the participant from among our NGO partners. The detailed schedule can be accessed here. The boot camp will conclude on the 26th of June 2016 (Sunday).

The in-class sessions will be held from 10 am to 5 pm in the serene surroundings of Zorba the Buddha, located along the Mehrauli Gurgaon Road in Delhi. The complete address is as below:

Zorba the Buddha

No. 7, Tropical Drive, Mehrauli – Gurgaon Road,

Ghitorni, New Delhi, India – 110030

The YLAC boot camp is open to all students:
  • Currently enrolled in grades 9th to 12th
  • No more than 19 years of age on 1st Jan, 2016

Since the primary medium of instruction will be English, comfort with the English language is required. Fluency in Hindi is desired as participants will be allocated to work with partner organisations on community projects.

 Fees and scholarships

Program fee: Rs. 25,000 per participant (excluding service tax @15%)

YLAC will make arrangements for lunch and refreshments during the in-class sessions at Zorba the Buddha as well as during the two planned field visits.

We are accepting applications on a rolling basis. Typically, applicants will be informed within a week of submitting the application online. Fees will be payable after the selection decision has been communicated to the applicant.

Applicants travelling from other cities should make their own boarding and lodging arrangements.

We recognize that all deserving candidates may not have the means to fund their participation in the program. To enable such candidates, YLAC will offer need and merit based scholarships to a few selected candidates.

For the June 2016 boot camp, up to five applicants will be offered 50% scholarships. To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must submit an additional essay explaining why they wish to participate in the program and why their application should be considered for a scholarship, as well as a short letter of recommendation from a teacher at school.

Scholarship decisions will be announced soon after the applications deadline.
