Are you a student who loves art and cares about the ocean? The Science Without Borders® Challenge 2027 invites young artists from around the world to use their creativity to raise awareness about ocean conservation and responsible navigation.
Organized by the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation, this annual international art contest encourages students to explore important ocean science and conservation issues through artwork.
The competition is free to enter and is open to primary and secondary school students aged 11–19 years. Winners can receive scholarships of up to $500.
Theme for 2027: “Navigate with Care”
The theme of the 2027 Science Without Borders® Challenge is “Navigate with Care.”
This year's challenge asks students to create artwork showing how mariners can help protect people and marine life by navigating safely and responsibly.
Participants can explore how decisions made on the water can:
- Protect marine animals and their habitats
- Conserve fragile marine ecosystems
- Promote safety at sea
- Reduce harm to the ocean environment
- Help people and nature coexist
- Protect the ocean for future generations
Through their artwork, students should demonstrate how responsible navigation can contribute to healthier oceans while keeping people safe.
Who Can Participate?
The Science Without Borders® Challenge is open to:
- Primary and secondary school students
- Students aged 11 to 19 years
- Students from around the world
- Students interested in art, science and ocean conservation
The contest is free to enter.
Awards and Scholarships
The winning entries will receive scholarships as follows:

The competition also features a People’s Choice Award. Winners in each age group will receive a $50 scholarship.
How to Enter
Students can participate by completing the following steps:
- Complete the online entry form.
- Upload a picture of your artwork.
- NEW THIS YEAR: Upload two photos of yourself creating your artwork at different stages.
- Submit all required information before the competition deadline.
The additional progress photos will help organizers verify that submitted artwork is the student's own work and not AI-generated.
Parental Consent for Students Under 13
Participants who are under 13 years old will need their parents or guardians to provide consent. Students and parents are encouraged to complete the process well before the deadline.
