International Student Essay Competition - Trust for Sustainable Living

The Trust for Sustainable Living (TSL) is proud to announce the launch of its 2025 International Student Competition, celebrating 15 years of inspiring young minds to engage with global environmental challenges. This year’s competition invites students from around the world to creatively respond to the theme “From Eco-Anxiety to Eco Action & Empowerment.”

A Platform for Expression and Action

Since its inception in 2010, TSL’s International Competitions have received over 14,000 entries from 120 countries, covering a wide array of sustainability topics, including biodiversity, climate justice, and nature-based solutions. This year, TSL encourages students to explore how emotions such as eco-anxiety and anger, which have emerged in response to the climate crisis, can be transformed into meaningful eco action and empowerment. With the rise in youth engagement over the past few years, this theme is a timely call to action.

A Unique Creative Challenge

The competition is open to all types of creative responses. Students can submit artwork, music, videos, poems, essays, stories, letters, or any other expressive medium they choose. There are no restrictions on the format, allowing participants to interpret the theme with as much creativity and originality as possible. However, all entries must follow the submission guidelines detailed in the competition brief.

Competition Prizes

The Grand Prize Winner will receive a trophy and a cash prize of £1,000, along with £500 for their school. A Runner-Up will also be awarded a trophy and £500, with their school receiving £250. All Teacher Champions, Finalists, Honourable Mentions, and International Debate participants will receive personalised e-certificates in recognition of their contributions.

Key Dates for the 2025 Competition

  • Competition Launch: 4th October 2024
  • Submission Deadline: 3rd March 2025
  • Finalists Announcement: 1st May 2025

How to Participate

Students, along with their teachers, are encouraged to register and submit their entries via the TSL Submittable page from 4th October 2024. Accepted formats include DOC, DOCX, PDF, JPG, PNG, MP3, and MP4, with a maximum file size of 400MB.

Empowering a New Generation of Climate Leaders

The 2025 competition is designed not only to raise awareness but also to provide a supportive outlet for young people to turn their feelings of eco-anxiety into proactive steps toward environmental action. Teachers are encouraged to act as Teacher Champions, guiding students through the submission process and helping foster a sense of empowerment and hope for the future.
