COLLINS ONLINE SPELLING BEE 2021

Collins Learning is delighted to announce "Collins Online Spelling Bee 2021" for students of classes 6 to 8 from 21 October to 29 October 2021.

Heats will be run online using three quizzes. The top 24 contestants from the heats will go through to the live semi-finals. There will be four semi-finals, each with six contestants. The winner from each semi- final will progress to the LIVE final.

The semi-finals and finals will be run in the same way. This competition will follow a traditional knock- out approach but will include opportunities for competitors to display spelling skills to ensure this is not simply a test of memory.
The words for the competitions will be taken from the Collins COBUILD Learner’s Illustrated Dictionary 2nd or 3rd Collins spelling lists with additional words from Collins English Dictionary. Etymologies are from Collins English Dictionary. You can download the Collins English Dictionary App.
All participants will get e-certificates. Top three participants will win prizes.

Competition Rules
The rules for the heats (qualifying rounds), semi-finals and finals are given here.

1. At 5:00 pm India time each day from 21 to 29 October 2021, an online spelling bee screening
round will go live. The link is given here. This will be activated only for the said duration.
2. This link will be live for only 10 minutes. There will be 20 questions. Please select the correct
option in case of multiple-choice questions.
3. Opening another tab or right-clicking on the text to copy it will be disallowed.
4. The highest scoring 24 participants over the 3 online screening rounds will be selected for the
semi-finals.
5. In case of tied score, the player who takes the least time will be selected.
6. PLEASE USE THE SAME EMAIL ID FOR ALL THREE QUIZZES.
7. Usage of any unfair means will lead to immediate disqualification.

Semi-finals and Finals
1. The competitions will be run as a traditional spelling bee, with competitors spelling words and eliminated for any incorrect spellings.
2. Each competitor will be asked to spell a word in turn.
3. Competitors will go in a set order in each round based on their rankings in the heats.
4. The semi-finals will consist of as many rounds as needed to eliminate five competitors to be left with a clear winner.
5. The finals will consist of as many rounds as needed to identify first, second and third places.
In the event that:
a. The two last-standing competitors both spell their words in the same round incorrectly, further rounds will be run until there is a clear winner.
b. Two competitors are knocked out in the same round (leaving a tie for third place), we will run a tiebreaker round to establish 3rd place after the winner has been identified.
6. Words will get gradually harder as the competition progresses. However, words for each round will be at approximately the same level for each competitor to ensure fair play.
7. Rounds 1 and 2: these will be warm-up rounds. The words that competitors will be asked to spell should be easy for them and should not pose any challenges, to help them to relax and to get used to the competition format.
8. Rounds 3 and 4: these rounds will include homophones. Homophones – words that sound the same but that are spelled differently, like be and bee (both pronounced /bɪː/) – are usually common words that are easy to spell, but competitors need to demonstrate spelling skills to be able to spell them correctly. If a competitor thinks that the word he or she has been asked to spell is a homophone, he or she should ask for the definition to clarify which word has to be spelled.
9. The word lists for the semi-finals and finals will be taken from Collins COBUILD Learner’s Illustrated Dictionary (2nd and 3rd editions) supplemented by words that are suitable from Collins English Dictionary. Only spelling and spelling variants given in Collins English Dictionary will be accepted in the competition. (This includes any American spellings included in the dictionaries.)
10. The word list for the competition will not be made available in advance. This competition is a test of spelling skills so words chosen will test contestants’ understanding of spelling rules, spelling conventions and knowledge of English vocabulary. Words from Indian languages that have been assimilated into English will be included throughout.

All participants will get e-certificates. Top three participants will win prizes.
Come together again for a fun and exciting game of words and spellings!
