BEAMLINE FOR SCHOOLS (BL4S) COMPETITION 2023 – Be a scientist! - Scholastic World - Contests for Indian Students

Saturday 14 January 2023

Did you ever wonder what it is like to be a scientist? If you’re up for a challenge, the BL4S competition is your chance to experience it. Any high-school students from all around the world can join the adventure.

Jump into the world of particle physics and think of a simple and creative experiment. You are not alone, if you need assistance, our contacts can support you. Don't miss it and take part in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

The competition is open to teams of high-school students who, if they win, are invited (with up to two supervisors) to DESY to run their experiment. Teams must have at least five students with at least one adult supervisor or "coach", but there is no upper limit to a team’s size (although just nine students per winning team will be invited to DESY). Teams may be composed of pupils from a single school, or a number of schools working together.

Find out more about the competition by checking out our website. Not sure if you should apply? Don’t be scared: a clever idea is all it takes to enter the competition. We can put every team in contact with experts that help them to refine their ideas and extensive documentation is available to both teachers and students.

Take part in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

The deadline for 2023 is midnight CET on April the 2th 2023.

High-school students from all over the world aged 16 and older on the first day of their visit at the laboratory (usually September of the year of the competition) are eligible. Younger students may form part of entering teams, but they cannot be invited in case of winning the competition.

(Illustrated prizes are indicative. CERN reserves the right to modify or exchange the prize should it so require.)

Two winning teams:
The two winning teams will win a trip of 10-12 days to DESY, to carry out their proposed experiments at a beam line. BL4S will cover the full costs of the winners' participation to the competition, including travel, local transport, accommodation in the DESY hostel and three meals per day. Before coming to DESY, the winning teams will have the opportunity to work together with scientists on their ideas on how to use the beam line and plan out a particle physics experiment. The exact time to be agreed between CERN, DESY and the winning teams.

Shortlisted teams:

Beside the two winning teams, up to 30 teams are shortlisted.
These teams will receive a CosmicPi particle detector for their school and a T-shirt for each team member.
