GENIUS Olympiad Science 2025

The GENIUS Science competition is a prestigious platform for students to apply scientific knowledge and innovation to solve pressing environmental issues. The competition encourages students to use the scientific method to analyze problems and propose solutions that address critical environmental concerns.

The GENIUS Science 2025 categories encompass a wide range of environmental topics, from air and water quality to energy use and human ecology. Students can choose a category that aligns with their interests, conduct research, and present their findings in a comprehensive research paper. The event also encourages model presentations, though they are not mandatory, as long as the research paper meets the required criteria.

GENIUS Science 2025 Categories

Students can choose from several categories that address a broad spectrum of environmental problems. These include:

Environmental Quality

This category focuses on assessing and addressing pollution, whether it is air, water, soil, or noise pollution. Students may explore issues such as:

  • Indoor and outdoor air quality
  • Health effects of various types of pollution
  • Pollution management systems
  • Wastewater treatment and solid waste management
  • Radiation and its effects on the environment

The goal is to find innovative solutions to reduce pollution and mitigate its harmful effects on ecosystems and human health.

Ecology and Biodiversity

The Ecology and Biodiversity category revolves around understanding the relationships between organisms and their environment. Topics may include:

  • The movement of food, resources, and energy through living communities
  • The impact of human activities, such as excessive fishing or farming, on ecosystems
  • Habitat destruction and its effect on biodiversity
  • Climate change and its effects on plant and animal populations
  • Genetic pollution and hybridization affecting biodiversity

The aim is to propose solutions that help preserve and protect ecosystems and biodiversity.

Resource and Energy

This category focuses on finding solutions to improve the efficiency and sustainability of resource and energy use. It covers:

  • Responsible use of non-renewable natural resources
  • The efficient production and consumption of energy
  • Soil degradation, erosion, and remediation
  • The efficient use of water resources
  • The contribution of non-renewable resources to global warming

Students are encouraged to propose solutions that reduce the environmental impact of resource extraction and energy use.

Human Ecology

Human ecology examines the relationships between humans and their environment, looking at how human activities affect the natural world and vice versa. This category explores topics like:

  • The effects of environmental changes on human behavior
  • Social justice regarding access to clean food, water, and education
  • Sustainable engineering and construction practices
  • Waste reduction and recycling programs
  • Public attitudes toward environmental policies and regulations

The goal is to propose ways to improve the relationship between society and the environment for a more sustainable future.

Innovation

In the Innovation category, students are tasked with creating new or improved products and processes that benefit both human health and the environment. Ideas may include:

  • Developing new tools or equipment for everyday use that reduce waste or improve efficiency
  • Engineering solutions that make processes faster, safer, or more sustainable
  • Creating products that contribute to a healthier and more environmentally friendly lifestyle

This category emphasizes creativity and practical problem-solving through innovation.

GENIUS Science Application Rules

To participate in GENIUS Science 2025, students must prepare and submit a comprehensive research paper that describes their project, including data, graphics, and supporting visuals. Here are the key rules and requirements for the application:

Eligibility

  • A GENIUS Science project can be prepared and presented by up to two students.
  • Students must submit a research description paper (project description) that outlines their research methodology, findings, and conclusions.
  • Models or prototypes are optional but encouraged to complement the research paper.

Research Paper Submission

  • The research paper must be submitted in PDF format and should not exceed 5MB in size.
  • The paper should be no more than 15 pages in length, excluding the title and references pages. The text should use Calibri or Arial font (size 11 or 12), with 1-inch margins on all sides.
  • The paper must include:
    • An introduction to the problem being addressed
    • A detailed description of the research methodology
    • Data and analysis (including any graphics, charts, or photos)
    • Proposed solutions and their expected impact
    • Conclusions and recommendations
  • No research projects without results will be accepted. Data must be included to show the findings of the research.

Research Paper Naming and Submission Guidelines

  • File Name: The research paper file name should be in English characters and less than 25 characters.
  • Submission Format: The paper must be submitted in PDF format only.
  • Students are also encouraged to submit a QUAD paper in addition to the research paper. This is optional but highly recommended.

What to Expect at the GENIUS Science Fair

At the GENIUS Science Fair, students will present their research findings in front of a panel of judges. While physical models are not mandatory, they are highly encouraged to complement the research paper and provide a more comprehensive understanding of the project. During the fair, students will explain their findings, demonstrate their models (if applicable), and answer any questions from the judges.

The competition aims to foster innovative thinking and scientific problem-solving to address real-world environmental challenges. Participants will be assessed on the quality of their research, their ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, and the practical application of their proposed solutions.

Important Dates

  • Application Deadline: April 15, 2025 (All research papers must be submitted by this date)

  • GENIUS Olympiad Fair: June 2025 (Selected finalists will present their research at the fair)
