Tiny Memoir Contest for Students by The New York Times

The New York Times invites teenagers to tell a true story about a meaningful life experience in just 100 words.

We’re excited to announce the Tiny Memoir Contest for students, inviting teenagers to craft a meaningful personal narrative in just 100 words! This contest encourages young writers to express themselves through the art of storytelling, capturing impactful moments from their lives.

Contest Dates:
November 6 to December 4, 2024

What We’re Looking For:

Tell us a true story about a significant experience in your life. There’s no need for a specific theme; we want to hear your voice and your unique perspective. Your narrative should have a clear beginning, middle, and end, focusing on a moment that resonates with you.

Contest Rules:

  • Your memoir must be 100 words or fewer, excluding the title.
  • Open to students aged 13 to 19 in middle school or high school.
  • All participants must have parent or guardian permission.
  • Original work only: No previously published pieces or those generated by AI.
  • Each student can submit one entry.
  • An artist’s statement describing your writing process must accompany your submission.

Resources for Participants:

To help you get started, we’ve provided a range of resources, including:

  • Writing prompts to inspire your narrative.
  • Access to winning entries from previous contests for inspiration.
  • A step-by-step guide to crafting your memoir.
  • Two “rehearsal spaces” for students to brainstorm and experiment with ideas.

How to Enter:

Entries can be submitted via the online form, which will be available on November 6, 2024. Ensure your submission is completed by December 4, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.

Prizes:

Winners will have the opportunity to have their work published on The Learning Network, with some entries possibly featured in the print editions of The New York Times.
